Our "dog-friendly" training involves communicating and teaching the dog without the use of painful collar "corrections", domination and intimidation. We believe the best relationship with our dogs starts with a positive, dog-owner partnership based on understanding, communication and respect. To form this partnership, we use training methods that are grounded in how dogs learn: the principles of operant conditioning – that is, that your dog's behavior can be modified by using simple consequences. Good consequences increase your dog's good behavior, and undesirable consequences reduce behaviors you don't like. Our training combines information with motivation: We provide information to the dog, teaching him the behaviors that earn good consequences (rewards such as praise, petting, food, and play, for example). These rewards motivate the dog to eagerly and willingly perform those behaviors. We use an indicator such as a word or a click sound to precisely mark a specific behavior, providing information that says, "The behavior that you just did has earned you a payoff." The payoff, the reward or reinforcer motivates the dog to want to perform that behavior. We have used several different methods of training, but unquestionably marker or "clicker" training is, quite simply, faster, clearer and easier for dogs to learn. And the results are better, too! This training approach is cooperative - resulting in control without domination and respect without fear. But best of all, it is fun for both the dog and the owner. We offer a wide range of training classes and private training using the principles of operant conditioning and this dog-friendly, positive approach.
